das sechskšpfige souljazz orchestra aus ottawa ist fŸr ein orchester zwar etwas klein geraten, dafŸr fallen spielfreude und selbstverstŠndnis auf sympathische weise grš§er aus. seit 2002 ist das politisch sendungsbewusste sextett in der originalbesetzung unterwegs, und wurde dabei schon dreimal fŸr den kanadischen juno award nominiert. ihre lyrisch starken texte verpacken die kanadier vielseitig und multilingual mit 80er-vintage-synthies in tropische lo-fi-tanznummern, die von einflŸssen aus soul, ethio-jazz, sixties-funk, afrobeats und latin zehren. 2007 gelang der band mit -mista president- ein internationaler club-hit, der nicht nur das interesse von gilles peterson weckte, sondern auch die tŸr zum label strut (mulatu astatke, ebo taylor, idris ackamor & the pyramids) šffnete. dort erschienen die alben -rising sun- (2010), -solidarity- (2012), -inner fire- (2013) und zuletzt -resistance- (2015). in dieser zeit kam es zu kollaborationen mit musikern von nigeria bis ruanda und kuba bis haiti. bei seinen zahlreichen ausverkauften shows teilte sich das kollektiv die bŸhne mit musikalischen schwergewichten wie femi kuti, stevie wonder und bob dylan. auch -under burning skies- zeichnet sich durch einen passionierten, analog produzierten groove-mix aus, der einfach nur glŸcklich macht.
